Balayage vs. Highlights: Understanding the Difference
October 4, 2026 · Dominican Hairdresser Johanny

Two popular ways to brighten your hair, two very different looks. Learn which one fits your style.
Traditional highlights
Highlights are usually placed with foils from root to end in a regular pattern. They give a brighter, more uniform result and can add a lot of lightness all over.
Balayage
Balayage is painted by hand onto the surface of the hair. It creates a soft, natural blend that is usually lighter toward the ends, like hair that has been in the sun.
Maintenance
Because balayage grows out softly without a harsh line, many people find it lower maintenance. Highlights may need more frequent touch-ups to keep the roots blended.
Choosing your look
Your natural color, your hair's condition and how often you want to visit the salon all matter. That is why color begins with a consultation at our salon. Bring photos you love and we will plan it together.
